Yesterday I had the privilege of spending Labor Day with Al’Lora’s family in Birmingham, AL. For the first time in nearly twenty years, we were able to be with all of her family on a holiday besides Christmas. It was quite a treat for all of us. We celebrated with some great chicken and barbecue from the smoker (compliments of Mark Watson) and a really big water slide for the kids. That includes the big kids.
The adults watched as long as they could and I was warned to bring my swimsuit because I would not be able to just watch. The kid in me starting yelling “I want to play.” There were safety instructions that made it very clear about weight limits and how many can slide at once. That was for the little kids of course. For the big kids, we couldn’t find any such instructions. If you know Al’Lora’s family, especially her crazy brothers and cousins, there was no way this was going to be safe. But man was it fun.
After about two or three hours of pretty rough play, my body had endured all the pain it could possibly manage. Let’s just say, they should’ve included instructions for big kids too. And maybe some special instructions for us crazy big kids. Today my body is paying for the rough housing and from what I hear the others are pretty sore too. That makes me feel a little better.
At the end of the day, there were no serious injuries and no hospital trips. Just big kids trying to stay young and relive the moments of childhood. I am thankful to be close enough to family to have been able to be together. Hope your Labor Day was just half as fun as mine.
We loved being with y’all too! I’d say it should be a yearly thing- but it might kill all off you old men next year!! Lol
